What’s it like to be a Veterinary Technician at Columbus Humane?

by Stephany Harris, RVT

Being a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) at Columbus Humane is an extremely rewarding and multi-faceted job! We are involved in many aspects of caring for dozens of different species of animals, not just cats and dogs! We have endless opportunities to handle, examine and treat animals including ferrets, chickens, degus, pigs, rats, hamsters, reptiles, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and more! (And yes, we have to be careful; the little critters are deceptively endearing and if we’re not careful, we may end up adopting a bird!)

RVTs at Columbus Humane have the distinct honor of giving names to many of the stray animals in our care, as well as ensuring each individual animal has everything he needs, before making his debut in our Adoptions program. What’s more fun than coming up with punny names like “Catsanova,” “Whispurr,” or “Clawdia,” for the cats and kittens in our care?

One of the most challenging, yet rewarding responsibilities as a RVT is working with our Cruelty Investigations Department. From examining animals when they first arrive, to providing ongoing treatment and care to animals who have suffered from abuse or neglect, the RVTs provide a critical role in improving the lives of all of animals that come through our doors. There is nothing better than positively impacting the lives of animals that have suffered and watching them transition into their forever home. Cue tears of joy!

Do you want to know the best thing about being a RVT at Columbus Humane? It's the people! From engaging with clients, collaborating with volunteers and rescue partners, teaching fourth year veterinary students, learning from co-workers, and finding inspiration from our supportive team, RVTs work with so many people who care about animals. And, Columbus Humane truly sets the bar for improving the standards of care for both the animals and those who advocate for them.

I am challenged every day with new experiences and always have opportunities to help the animals and people in our community, which is why I love my job!
