4th of July Pet Safety

4 Ways to Keep Your Pet Safe during the 4th of July

It’s that time of year again, pet owners! Below are some helpful tips to keep your pet safe and happy during celebrations this month.

1. Keep Pets Away from Fireworks

Fireworks and pets don’t mix well. It is important that you keep all pets indoors when lighting fireworks. This includes items like glow sticks, sparklers, bang snaps, etc.  Not only does your home provide cover from the sound, but also keeps your cat or dog physically safe and away from harm’s way.

If you are also worried about your pet being scared while at home, talk to your vet about the options for medication and products that reduce stress.

2. Heat Warning

Summer is in full swing and so is the heat! Be cognizant of how long your pets are outside in the heat. When partying with your friends on the 4th, it can be easy to lose track of time and your pet.

Ensure to give your dog or cat a break in the A/C and always have shelter and a supply of fresh water nearby

How do I know if my pet is overheating?

Here are signs that your pet may be overheating:

  • Anxiousness

  • Excessive Panting

  • Restlessness

  • Excessive Drooling

  • Mild weakness

  • Increased Heart Rate

  • Labored Breathing

3. Leave Pets at Home

It is tempting to want to bring your pet to a fun event, but always consider your pet’s safety at the event. If you are on the fence about whether to take your dog or cat to a 4th of July party, we recommend keeping them home.

The loud boom of fireworks and large crowds can be very overwhelming for our four-legged friends. Keeping your pets at home is the safest place for them to be this weekend. They will be happily waiting for you when you get back.

Before leaving your pet at home, make sure your pet is in a safe space. In the event they do become spooked, you want to ensure they cannot escape or hurt themself.

4. Lost Pets on the 4th

More pets go missing on the 4th of July than any other time of the year.

To keep your pet from going missing this weekend, make sure they are always supervised and leashed. In addition, a microchip can help locate your dog or cat in the event they do escape. Get your pet microchipped to relieve the stress of losing your pet. All dogs and cats adopted through Columbus Humane come microchipped for yours and their safety.

Final Thoughts

With the correct precautions taken, everyone can have a safe and enjoyable Holiday weekend.

Remember, the 4th of July Holiday is more for us, than our pets. When in doubt, keep your pets at home in a safe place this weekend. If you do choose to take them to the celebration, always be aware of yours and their surroundings, keep them away from all loud noises and make sure they have plenty of water and shade.
