Columbus Humane Responds to COVID-19

(March 17, 2020) — In response to the COVID-19 outbreak in Central Ohio, Columbus Humane changed the adoption process to keep people healthier and make animals more accessible to the community. We will be open to the public by appointment only for adoptions and we are not accepting visitors, only those intending to adopt. All adoption fees are 50 percent off this week. The more adoption-ready animals we can find homes for now, frees up available space to admit animals in need.

Columbus Humane is extending adoption hours in an effort to reduce contact and allow more availability for appointments throughout the day.

New adoption hours by appointment are as follows:
Monday - Friday: 9AM - 6PM
Saturday - Sunday: 9AM - 5PM

For those seriously considering adoption, call Columbus Humane to make an appointment at 614-777-7387. We will instruct members of the public to remain in their cars until the time of their appointment to reduce contact with others. Our normal adoption screening process still applies.

Columbus Humane’s Eat Purr Love Cat Café is closed until further notice. Several cats had adoptions pending and have been sent home. The remaining cats came back to Columbus Humane and have been sent to foster homes.

Columbus Humane is suggesting all current pet owners have a back-up plan for care in the event they cannot care for their pets in the future. Also, for those who are quarantined at home, we recommend keeping your pets quarantined with you to reduce exposure to illness. Animals are not at risk for contracting or carrying COVID-19, however like any surface in your home or like the clothing you wear, contagions can live on your pets which is why we recommend limiting other interactions outside of the home for your pets as well.

In additional effort to reduce risk to our animals and in anticipation of our own staffing shortages, Columbus Humane’s Animal Support Center will remain open but is no longer accepting non-urgent intakes and prioritizing animals with the greatest health and safety risks. We will also be increasing the number of foster placements to find housing for the animals not quite ready for their forever homes.

Columbus Humane is cancelling or postponing all community event participation, including our signature event Celebrity Chef, which was originally planned for May 14th. Non-essential meetings and group trainings have been postponed until further notice.

By taking precautions now, we hope to mitigate as much COVID-19 outbreak as we can impact. Columbus Humane is always focused on the health and welfare of people and animals in our community and we remained focused on ensuring the very best care.
