Wednesday, December 14, 2022 (New Albany, Ohio) – A total of 21 pets were removed from a home in New Albany last week, among those were 18 Golden Retrievers. Probable cause was found on the property today, citing unsanitary conditions inside and outside of the home. The conditions of the pets will be evaluated by Columbus Humane individually, however many are showing signs of illness related to overcrowding and unsanitary living conditions.
“The home and conditions were found to be unsanitary and deplorable, unfit for humans or animals,” said Jessica Scott, Chief Humane Agent. “It’s our job to intervene when people are overwhelmed and animals become victims of neglect. Hoarding can effect anyone, anywhere.”
Columbus Humane has filed charges for prohibitions concerning companion animals; section 959.131 of the Ohio Revised Code and probable cause was established at the hearing on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.
“We’re an animal welfare organization—we care deeply about pets. But we also care deeply about people. It’s difficult to see anyone living in these conditions and we’re glad to have put an end to it,” said Rachel D.K. Finney, CEO. “Now the healing can begin. These animals deserve our very best efforts and that’s exactly what we’re giving them.”
The rescued Golden Retrievers and other pets have a long road of recovery ahead of them. They are being fully examined and treated for illness by Columbus Humane veterinary staff. As they are evidence held in a criminal investigation, these animals will not be ready for adoption until they are fully healthy and if the court awards custody to Columbus Humane.
